I get asked this question quite a bit:
How has mindfulness made you a better parent?
My answer starts with an assurance that the skill of mindfulness has indeed helped me be a better parent.
But then I quickly add that it’s a little more complicated than it might seem.
Mindfulness is not a specific parenting technique.
And even as a mindfulness practitioner, you must decide on parenting techniques and styles just like every other parent does.
But when you develop the skill of mindfulness - the ability to be aware of your internal and external experiences without judgment - you parent from a place of presence, honesty, and authenticity.
This allows you to connect and attune to your kids on a deep emotional level that is far beyond the behavior that most parenting styles address.
And this indeed makes you a better parent, no matter what style of parenting you employ.
Would you like to learn how to develop this skill?
