Description

Today on the podcast, April and Danielle are joined by author and consultant, Michael John Carley. Michael John has been a steadfast presence in the autism spectrum world since being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the same time as his 4-year old son in 2000. He joined the NYU community in Fall 2020 as a Consultant for Disability Inclusive Culture at OGI (Office of Global Inclusion). Once the university started to return to in person work, he opted to switch departments over moving back to NYC from Boston so that his son could be a high school soccer star! Michael John is now an Accessibility Specialist at the Moses Center, a role that includes facilitating the Connections Program. In 2021, he published a book called, "The Book of Happy, Positive, and Confident Sex for Adults on the Autism Spectrum...and Beyond!"

In this conversation, Michael John shares about how sex has often been an easy way for him to connect with folks throughout his life. He also explores how sex education could be modified to be more accessible for folks on the spectrum and asks for April and Danielle to share their thoughts on this idea. This portion of the conversation does involve references to sexual assault and this can be activating to some. Please take care of yourself, listen to your body and turn off the episode, if needed.

If you or someone you know has experienced a sexual assault or relationship violence, we encourage you to reach out for support.
