Today on the podcast, April and Danielle welcome Joyce Renzhong Tan, Director at the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity and Strategic Innovation. Prior to her current role, Joyce spearheaded Diversity Initiatives at NYU Shanghai and founded a digital project called “unCoVer” which focused on promoting awareness and solidarity around the pandemic.
During this interview, Joyce shares how boundaries can be gendered and how this has impacted their journey, as well as how they learned about boundaries when others have violated them. To punctuate her thoughts on boundaries, she reads a quote by Kai Chen Thom from their book I Hope We Choose Love: A Trans Girls Notes from the end of the World: “Boundaries are not about 'yes' or 'no', they are not about the limitations or permission, or even this thing we call consent; they are the space between me and you, the borderland where fear ends and desire begins, they are the place where love can live without being lost.” April, Danielle, and Joyce explore desirability, negative norms, and the fact that we can experience and embrace pleasure from many acts – some of which don’t include our genitalia.
