Today on Good Sex @ NYU, April and Danielle are joined by Dr. Anne McEneany and nurse practitioner Pelagia (Peggy) Pappathomas from NYU’s Counseling and Wellness Services. Dr. McEneaney has been a practicing mental health provider for 30 years, 18 of which were at NYU. Throughout her career, she focused on working with people who experience disordered eating challenges. Peggy has been working at NYU for a year and prior to that, she worked with those seeking inpatient eating disorder treatment at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital.
In this episode, we explore the impact culture has on our bodies, eating behavior, and how disordered eating can impact relationships. Anne and Peggy share several signs of when eating behaviors become harmful and unhealthy from a clinical and individual perspective. The conversation explores the importance of experiencing our bodies as subjects instead of objects, and the influence TV and social media have on harmful eating behaviors.
