कुंदेरा की ख्याति 80 के दशक में अपने चरम पर थी जब हर कोई The Book of Laughter and Forgetting और The Unbearable Lightness of Being के साथ ही दिखाई पड़ता था। तब चेक कम्युनिज्म ज़्यादा पुराना नहीं था और कुंदेरा की खिलन्दड़ी उश्रृंखलता को एक 'ग्रिम बैकड्रॉप' मुहैया कराता था। अब ये देखने वाली बात है कि बिना इस पृष्ठ भूमि के कुंदेरा के डार्क मजाकिया और कई बार उश्रृंखल आत्मिक अन्वेषण की वेदना अभी भी उतनी ही प्रसांगिक और उपयुक्त है या नहीं। उस दम घोंटू माहौल में शायद जो खिलंदड़ापन और कुछ हद तक अश्लील नंगापन, अभिव्यक्ति की हुंकार लगते थे, क्या आज, जब उस माहौल को याद करना इतना आसान नहीं रह गया है, कुंदेरा उतने ही प्रभावी और प्रासंगिक हैं?
