The trap we fall into is mastering one skill and expecting to be at the same level in other skills. We learn to write a paper, and then expect to start at a higher level when preparing the presentation. Which makes us:
- Go back to doing what we are good at to make ourselves feel better
- Give up before we’ve tried enough times because we feel uncomfortable
A beginner’s mind combined with caring is a beautiful place to start. It requires openness, and admitting that we do not know, without criticizing and sabotaging ourselves.
At TU Eindhoven, the speech we get at the end of our PhD is about understanding the limits of our knowledge. The fact that we have a degree in one specific field, does not make us experts in another.
What is the skill you are focusing on and how can this serve you in your development?
