At the end of David's life, he had to make a change. He was no longer the victorious warrior & giant slayer he had once been. But his time in the battle was over not because he was no longer useful - it's because he was too valuable. So David spent the remainder of his reign setting up the next generation (i.e. his son Solomon) for success.
