Most of us Western Protestant Christians don't emphasize fasting as much as Jesus did. Sure, he said his disciples shouldn't fast while he was with them, but there would come a time when they would fast. Just like with giving and praying, Jesus says, "When you fast..." It was an expectation. But now it's become an expectation that we have ignored for too long. Let's look at Jesus' guide to fasting and get to the heart of the practice in Scripture.
