SEASON 7 EPISODES
EARTH DAY 2021 & SMALL ISLAND SUSTAINABILITY
On this episode of the Youth Perspective sit down with a myriad of individuals as we discuss Earth Day 2021 which was held April 22nd around the globe and take a deep dive into the world of Small Island Sustainability. A little about Earth day, 51 years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not exist, which meant there was no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, and no legal regulatory mechanism to protect our environment. That all changed in April 1970 when Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities -- and it worked. In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of the EPA, a new federal agency to tackle environmental issues. Now, each year on April 22, people all around the world come together on Earth Day to celebrate the planet's environment and raise public awareness about pollution.
We sit down and speak with:
Dr. Amina Moss - Research Associate in the Small Island Sustainability Programme
Dr. Kristen Unwala - Programme & Grant Development Specialist in the Small Island Sustainability Programme
Ms. Camesha Wilburgh - Small Island Sustainability Student
Ms. Makeda Serju - Small Island Sustainability Student
We discuss the steps that the University of the Bahamas has taken to bring awareness to Earth day and discuss the impact of Small Island Sustainability here in the Bahamas.
