This is definitely an odd text and often gets taken out of context, but it really is a passage that should challenge and bring us to a place of deeper commitment and growth in Christ. It is so important that we reconcile this passage with the full gospel of Jesus, and realize that when we follow Jesus, it does mean that some people may not understand that decision. They may not understand why we do what we do and it could affect relationships and opportunities we have in life. The question is, are we still going to choose to follow.
