Yesterday, a massive explosion wiped at least 135 people and injured 4,000 others in Lebanon’s capital city Beirut. Many of you would’ve watched the blast on social media or TV. I see media sort of creates contrast between this blast and Japan’s atomic bomb in Hiroshima.
There is a reason behind the juxtaposition. Today is the 75th anniversary of the Hiroshima’s atomic bomb. UK based news Dailymail reported the blast was a fifth size of a nuclear bomb called “Little Boy” was sourced from the local media in Lebanon. BBC reported that specialists at the University of Sheffield in the UK estimate that the blast had about one tenth of the explosive power of Hiroshima. There are many assumption on the impact of the blast. As far as I researched, it is about 10-20% of the Hiroshima’s atomic bomb “Little Boy.”
I think the awareness of the use of nuclear weapon is very important. But, it is inappropriate comparing between the nuclear weapon during the World War Two, and a potential miss-management of the chemical. President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse. "We leave it to the experts to determine the reasons," he said.
Coming weekend, in Japan, people remember the impact of atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the WW2. This year, is the 75th anniversary of the incidents when Japan was an enemy of the world. This year, the size of ceremony will be smaller than usual because of preventing the COVID-19 in the city. I will prey, as I do as part of my morning routine, for ancestories and victims.
Meanwhile, Carlos Ghosn was on trend in Japan’s Twitter. Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo reported, Carlos Ghosn and his family are reportedly safe. The defendant, by the definition of the law, Ghosn’s house, the house technically belongs to Nissan, was “destroyed” by the blast. I can see the battle over the house in the future. Like whether the damage belongs to Nissan or Ghosn.
