In this message, Pastor Eric reflects on the story of Jesus' transfiguration--a "coming out" story of sorts. Atop a mountain with his three closest disciples, Jesus reveals a truth about him that up to this point had not been fully seen or understood, even by them. The question that follows--for the disciples is how will they respond. Will they "listen to him," as the voice of God calls them to? Or will they react by trying to put Jesus back in the boxes/understandings they're familiar--and more comfortable--with?
This story of transfiguration isn't just about Jesus. Moments of transfiguration--of unveiling--happen to each and all of us throughout life. We learn a profound truth; we see someone in the fullness of their glory; we have "mountaintop experiences" where we see life with such clarity. But then, like the disciples, we have to go back down the mountain. We have to figure out how to honor this truth, honor what we've seen and know in the midst of the stresses, overwhelm, and messiness of everyday life. This is the challenge for the disciples, and for us.
