Most have probably heard the saying, “Small minds talk about people, average minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas.” While the interpretations may vary, the spirit is meant to point out that if we consume ourselves by looking down on, finding fault with, and judging others, therein lay the extent of our world, existence, and impact - small. When we focus on only the flaws in others, we distract ourselves from seeing, embracing, developing, and refining our very own opportunities for growth, development, and improvement. Even standing still can mean going backward in a world of perpetual motion. If those we judge seek to improve and better themselves, it won’t be long before they surpass us while we are so busy trying to tear them down. This, in turn, can potentially create a vicious cycle we fabricate of persistent envy of their progress hindered by our self-created stagnation. Being the bigger person and concentrating on the areas we can improve, grow, and develop serves us best in helping us live up to our fullest potential instead of down to just above that which we find repugnant or beneath us. The next time you are tempted to find fault in others, ask yourself which area(s) you can do or be better in instead of sharing your opinion of someone else’s perceived shortcomings with them. Growth is found in letting that higher focus guide you to a better version of yourself – one that you can be proud of and live up to.
