As we approach a New Year, it is important that we approach with a full confidence and trust in the Lord. He is able to carry us through yet another year. In Proverbs 3, Solomon challenges his son to trust Yahweh, to fear Yahweh and to honor Yahweh. Trusting the Lord suggests a commitment to rely on him alone for help and for protection, for care. We are so prone to lean on our own abilities, our own understanding, and live our lives apart from real trust on God. As Solomon challenges his son, all believers must also trust God with complete confidence, because through Jesus, we can be confident that he will sustain us in this New Year.
The purpose of Proverbs as a whole is clearly developed for us in the first seven verses of the book. Wisdom begins with a genuine reverence for God, resisting our natural temptation to reject God’s wise direction and treat it as insignificant. We must remember our need for the wisdom of God and the strength that only God can provide to rightly apply that wisdom.
