Genesis 42:1-46:27 As the account of Joseph in Genesis continues, the 10 brothers of Joseph reenter his life and we see his response to them. Throughout the account, Joseph seems to be testing his brothers, as he seems to suggest (42:15-16). Often it is difficult and debated to understand what Joseph is doing and why he is doing it. In truth, this is not the point of this account. The point is clearly the gracious deliverance provided by God (45:5-8), even through the evil of the brothers against Joseph. Joseph is reconciled to his brothers and sends for the entire family to return to Egypt. Jacob comes, with the assurance of God through a night vision. God tells Jacob not to fear, rehearses his promises to Jacob and confirms that he is directly Jacob to Egypt, but will also bring his family back from Egypt. Despite sin, guilt and broken relationships, God provides gracious deliverance for his people; God has provided gracious deliverance for you today through Jesus. You too can be delivered from sin, guilt and broken relationships.
Genesis is a book of new beginnings. It offers the origins of the universe, the atmosphere, the human race, language, culture, marriage, language, order, time, worship, and a chosen people. Genesis focuses on God as creator and sustainer of all things. Genesis introduces the patriarchs of Israel and the promises made to them by God. Genesis demonstrates throughout that God has spoken, spoken in creation, spoken in blessing humanity, spoken even in the curses and judgment because of sin and evil of humanity. Genesis is focused on the communication of God with humanity, communication that presents the truths of God, about himself and his world he created.
