Peter continues again to remind these believers who are facing
opposition and suffering that there will be vindication in the end, just
as Jesus was vindicated following his suffering. One of the most
important things to remember about a difficult text is the overall
context in which it occurs. Here Peter begins by making a point of the
suffering of Jesus, that provides forgiveness of sins for us that know
him. He continues by reminding us of his resurrection, followed by his
ascension to his place of exaltation at the Father's right hand. The
suffering of Jesus was not the end and neither is your suffering. The
hope Peter offers to suffering believers here is the truth that
vindication will come in the end. At the judgment, God will address all
the wrongs and judge rightly and appropriately.
Peter writes to believers who have been scattered because of the
opposition and persecution they are facing. These believers are now
scattered across Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, Bithynia; which is
modern day Turkey. Peter addresses throughout this epistle the
appropriate response to suffering. Part of that response involves
understanding our connection as believers to Jesus and the suffering
that he endured on our behalf. We can follow the example of Jesus and
endure suffering and the various hardships that may come into our lives.
Peter writes to encourage these believers to endure because of the
living hope that we have through Jesus. You can endure today, as you
hope in Jesus.
