Description

As John continues the messages from Jesus to the churches, he addresses Smyrna, the persecuted church and Pergamum, the tolerant church. The call to both churches is to remain faithful, to Smyrna, they must remain faithful despite coming persecution. For Pergamum, they must repent of their tolerance for false teaching and remain faithful. The tolerance of the church of Pergamum was most likely connected to an attitude or teaching of religious compromise in the areas of pagan celebrations and immorality. The rebuke and call for repentance is a demand not to "go along to get along" in their city. This same temptation exists today. We also, must remain faithful, because Jesus can deliver and provide for his own.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ is written to further our understanding about Jesus. It demonstrates throughout his majesty, power and authority over the events and affairs of mankind. The Revelation of Jesus Christ demonstrates that ultimately – Jesus wins and because he does, we can and must trust him. No matter what comes into our lives, we can and must confidently and faithful rest in the ability of our God and Savior to work in our lives and in the world he has created. Jesus is worthy and “to him be glory and power forever and ever.” As John concludes, he quotes Jesus, “I am coming soon.” John responds, as every believer can and should – Come, Lord Jesus!
