What is the most precious resource in the universe? Is it gold, diamonds, other naturally occurring substances that have arbitrary value in the eyes of human beings? Or could the most precious thing be the diversity of life itself - We know of only one example of an ecosystem that exists in a thin layer on a single lonely planet. Life may exist elsewhere, but the genetic diversity of life on earth is more precious to the survival of our species than every other resource combined. When a species goes extinct, the flame of a genetic lineage that spans back into time millions of years is extinguished. What happens when all the little flames of fragile life go out?
This episode we speak with Dr. Sarada Krishnan, the Director of Programs for Crop Trust, an international non-profit fighting to ensure Food and Nutrition Security for our civilization, and dedicated to preserving the genetic diversity of all plant life on our planet. They are responsible for the Svalbard seed back, an incredible bunker, dug into the side of a mountain, in one of the most inhospitably cold places on earth. It exists for one reason - to house the seeds of the plants of our ecosystem, to protect genetic diversity at all cost, and when called upon, to bring an extinct species back from being snuffed out forever.
