Description

There is connection between the giving of the law at Sinai which is one of the things Jews celebrate at the feast of Weeks or Shavuot which we call Pentecost, and the giving of the Spirit to the church to enable the mission of the apostles. The connection can be partially found in the book of Ruth which is read in the synagogue at Shavuot. Ruth is the convert par excellence. She accepts Judaism without asking the question, what's in it for me. She did what Abraham did, left her people and her gods behind and believed Yahweh. At Sinai, the people hear the Ten Commandments and tell Moses that is enough for them, they have seen who God is and that He loves them in the plagues and in their deliverance, they will do whatever else He requires, even before hearing it. We have come to believe it is necessary to sweeten the pot in preaching the Gospel by telling people lies like the health and wealth gospel, something Jesus never did. What's in for me is eternal life in future and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit now, the presence of God within.
