Psalm 37:3-4 - Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

There are so many things that we can put our trust in. We put our trust in our health that our bodies will get through one more day. We trust that our cars will take us to where we need to go. We trust that our friends and family will be there for us when we need them. Sadly, no matter how firm those things are, they will one day fail us.

While we certainly can put our trust in these things, we have to understand that any one of these things could break the trust that we have in them. Our bodies will become weak and frail. Our cars will at some point stop running. Our friends and family will not always be there to support us. Because the world and the things in it are ever changing, we need a more firm foundation to stand upon that will never change.

We all want to put our trust in something that is constant and faithful. Thankfully, we as Christians know that the Lord is the only truly constant, faithful foundation that we could ever know. So as you lean on him, putting your trust in him to sustain you, guide you and protect you, there are a few things that you should also do.

First, you should seek to do good today. By your good deeds you will draw attention to the trustworthy God who called you to these good things. Second, learn to be faithful in what you do, treating faithfulness like a friend that you want close to you at all times. God is trustworthy, which means that he is faithful. You can count on him. Christians should be people that others can count on as well.

Third, delight yourself in the Lord. Think of this: God cares about your joy. He wants you to have delight in this life, not to walk around in sadness and despair. If you want true joy, you will find it in the Lord, so pursue him and delight in him will follow. The more you come to know God, the more glorious things you will see in him that will bring true delight to your soul. You will even find that your desires change to look more like his desires.

It is because of this that we can know that if we trust in God and delight in God that he will give us what our hearts desire, but those desires will be more and more conformed to what God loves and desires. We can desire many things in this life, most of which are temporary desires, but God gives us the ability to desire that which is eternal.

You cannot be strong today if you don’t have a solid foundation to trust in, so trust in God. What you delight in today will give you hope, so delight in the eternal God. What a privilege it is to know him and be known by him, and to know that his delight can be ours, leading to a greater hope and joy than we may have ever imagined.
