WHAT IF THE TOXIC PERSON IN YOUR WORKPLACE WAS YOU?

WOULD YOU KNOW IT?

WOULD YOU OWN IT?

I want to describe three basic toxic people which can be found in many if not most work environments. You decide if any of these describe you and whether or not you are willing to change.

1. GARBAGE TRUCKS

I get this one from Dr John C Maxwell. These are the people who show up in your work space and dump all their problems, challenges and issues on your desk. Often they are not expecting you to solve them or even offer ideas or solutions to cope. They are just misery in need of company.

2. NEGATIVE NELLIES

No matter what happens they have a negative, pessimistic world view and a loud vocal opinion to accompany it. They feel bad about even the most hopeful of circumstances and are not content until they convince other to feel poorly as well.

3. PICKED ON PEOPLE

Nothing which goes wrong in their life is their fault. Everything was caused by someone else. Likely because they “hate me” or “they are jealous of me”. This particular kind of toxicity is less obvious because it is camouflaged behind a false sense of pride and confidence. However, when a “big win” is expected by this person and it doesn’t happen, they blame everyone but themselves for the failure or missed opportunity.

If you find any of these tendencies in yourself you need to address them immediately. They will have a direct impact on your ability to get along well with others and eventually a direct impact on your promotability and hire ability.

Leaders especially must be SELF AWARE enough to know if they have slipped into these habits and correct them immediately.
