In the U.S. educational system, we are taught to choose a career based on what we see
others doing around us. We are expected to find a career outside of ourselves. Very early
in childhood, we are asked what we want to be when we grow up. A doctor? A lawyer? A
teacher? What your parent does for a living? We are given lists of career examples and
areas of study to choose from. It is no wonder that so many of us live decades of our lives
without finding out what makes us happy.
In Japan, they believe very differently. They believe that our Ikigai is hidden deep inside us
and requires an internal search to discover. Ikigai is a Japanese word describing a reason
for being. Some also explain it as your reason for getting out of bed in the morning.
Studies have shown that the Japanese people who are living their Ikigai have the highest
percentage of people who live to see their 100th birthday and beyond. Not only do they
live longer than most of the world, they are healthier and vibrant into their advanced
years. The rate of chronic illness is much lower and they do not suffer from the same
menopause symptoms that Americans have come to accept as normal. The opposite of
depression is not happiness—it’s purpose. I believe that having a clear purpose creates
happiness and reduces the stress in our lives. Clarifying your Ikigai can be life changing.
