It may sound far fetched and raise all kinds of questions. But remember when the concept of genetically modified foods hit mainstream media decades ago. There was uproar, but look where they are now. You're probably eating them right now without even realising it.
There are a number of issues with conventional meat production methods and there are estimates that our demand for meat will double globally in the next 30 years. The benefits of producing meat in labs, otherwise known as cell-based meats, is that it creates enormous potential to improve the environmental impact of animal production on the globe, have a very positive impact on animal welfare and also food safety.
The concerns that it may raise are the unknown factors; it's not natural, what if something goes wrong in production, what are the long-term impacts, how thorough will the regulation of this industry be, etc.
What seriously got my attention was who's investing in the work in this area. Two of the most innovative and forward thinking on the planet - Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson who are part of a team who just invested $161 million in Memphis Meats who are at the forefront of progressing the technology in this area.
Watch this space because it could be on our supermarket shelves before you know it.
