Captain Joy Manthey joins me on the show to kick off Season 2. A hustler since childhood, she climbed onto a city bus one morning with her weekly allowance of fifty cents and found herself stuck at the foot of Canal Street in New Orleans. She made her way onboard the Steamer President at city front and went immediately to work in concessions. That same 10-year-old girl told her 5th grade teacher she'd one day be a river pilot. Dismayed not at all by the response she received, Capt. Joy indeed made her way into the wheelhouses of an array of vessels over a long and storied career that is still hooked up and hard down.
