• Your best leaders might not be called manager
• “We like to call those people the ‘sparks’”
(Total Recorded Time is 14:30)
Executive coach Courtney Lynch, who has worked for years with high-performing leaders to help them achieve next-level results, says applying some of the leadership training used by the Marine Corps can bring out untapped talent in any organization.
And she doesn’t mean the stereotypical Marine drill sergeant approach.
“There are sometimes certain people on the teams that we’re involved with that just seem to have a lot of influence, and a lot of credibility,” she says. “We like to call those people the ‘sparks.’”
Sparks are not born, but made, she says, noting that it begins with re-thinking how to respond to pressing challenges -- and deal with fear.

In their book “Spark: How to Lead Yourself and Others to Greater Success,” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, June 2020), Courtney Lynch and co-author Angie Morgan shed light on what defines a “spark” to help managers recognize and kindle the “sparks” within their organization.
