•  “When you bring up the word ‘suicide,’ people shut down”

(Total Recorded Time is 26:05)

Tom Fargnoli, a retired software and systems engineer and former Catholic Church deacon, wants to see business leaders talking about suicide.

“When you bring up the word ‘suicide,’ people shut down,” says Mr. Fargnoli.  “In most cases, people are in so much emotional pain. ”

He married his high school sweetheart and had two children and five grandchildren. Then his life took a dramatic and unexpected turn: His wife took her own life.

“No one imagined my wife going that route,” he says.

Tom Fargnoli tells how that suicide changed the direction of his life – and what business leaders should be doing to help their workers cope with similar circumstances in this Bizgnus Podcast.

Mr. Fargnoli goes into greater detail in his new book, “The Deacon: An Unexpected Life” (Yorkshire Publishing, September 2020).

He says all the proceeds from his book will be going to suicide awareness.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says there were 47,511 people who took their own lives in 2019, making it the 10thleading cause of death in the U.S.  In 2019, there were a total of 1.38 million attempted suicides.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
