Here’s a factoid you might need: A pair of tennis shoes is good for about 600 miles of walking.
That’s according to Robert Schrader of Bakersfield, who wore out three pairs of tennis shoes, a pair of hiking boots and some snow boots in walking from San Francisco to New York City in the last half of 2021.

Averaging more than 20 miles a day at the beginning, Mr. Schrader’s pace was down to an average of 11 to 24 miles per day at the end of his trek.
“I traveled 3,187 miles,” he says, “3,030 of that was walked.”
Mr. Schrader is chief branding officer of Y-Empowerment Inc., a Bakersfield non-profit organization that helps youth who have experienced domestic violence.
