Even in these days when it seems there are more job openings than people to fill them, job seekers should treat their references as a treasured asset, says Jeff Shane, president of a company that checks references – for job seekers.
It makes good business sense – and is simply respectful professional etiquette – to stay in touch with former bosses, he says, because this will pay dividends many times over when they provide favorable professional references.
But Mr. Shane says sometimes job seekers are quietly and effectively blackballed by what they thought were solid references.
