To love God you need to know Him and understand His essence. Jesus Christ revealed Himself to the apostles who recorded it for us in the canon of Scripture. “The world has not known You, but I know You and these men [the apostles] have known You that You sent Me because I declared unto them Your name and I gave them Your Word” (John 17:25-26). God is Sovereignty, Righteousness, Justice, Love, Eternal Life, Omnipotence, Omniscience, Omnipresence, Immutability and Veracity. This is His essence, His attributes. We are totally dependent upon the divine revelation in the Bible to know God in order to love God. Personal love for God is your motivational virtue in life. Impersonal love for others is your functional virtue. You love God based on who He is, not based on what you are. Love for God is critical in your life if you are going to obey Him and advance in the Christian life.
