Welcome to another episode of Hitting the Streets Podcast. Today on the show I have a returning guest, Melissa Cole. Please tune in to hear her exciting news about the Historical Marker for 1930 Sherman Riot.
George Hughes was accused of raping a white woman at his employer's farm near Sherman. Hughes was later brought to the Sherman courthouse for trial when a mob gathered. May 9, 1930, George Hughes was lynched, the Grayson County Courthouse was burned to the ground, and the black business district on Mulberry Street was destroyed. Although this story happened a long time ago, racism still continues to affect us today.
