George Hughes was accused of raping a white woman at his employer's farm near Sherman. Hughes was later brought to the Sherman courthouse for trial when a mob gathered.
May 9, 1930, George Hughes was lynched, the Grayson County Courthouse was burned to the ground, and the black business district on Mulberry Street was destroyed.
Although this story happened a long time ago, racism still continues to affect us today. We share this story for awareness and for the hatred that was shown toward a black man who was accused of a vile act. Please tune in to listen to my panel, Melissa Eason, Anika Eason, J. Fitz and Matthew Krov as we share our thoughts and opinions on this awful event that made history across the United States.
