What is so bad about home that you cannot go back there and settle? Meshack answers this question in his debut novel, Once There Was a Star, and in this episode.
Once There Was A Star, made me realize what privilege looks like and to appreciate how we indeed experience life differently. While there were real victims of war, I only experienced the tragedy of war in a book.
When I read the book, I found myself so fully immersed in it that I almost failed to draw the line between my real-life experience and what was in the book. I found myself leaving home while looking over my shoulder so that anything looking suspicious of another war would find me alert. It required me to keep reminding myself that the war was just in the book I was reading.
Weeks ago, I sat down with the author, Meshack Yobby, to talk about the relevance of this book, why he chose war for his debut novel, and how heavy the creation process was.
If you have read this book or are a lover of a good story, this is the episode for you.
