1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."
You do not need to be afraid of the devil. The Bible says resist him, and he will run away in terror (James 4:7). Nowhere in scripture will you find a verse that tells you to fight the devil. He is already a defeated foe. Just imagine facing an enemy, and all you need to do is resist. You are not resisting to gain victory. You have already done that, for Christ has secured your victory over the devil long ago. The fact that all you need to do is resist tells you where the real power is. It is with you!
So, how do you resist the devil? One way to resist is through meditation. The word 'meditate' in Joshua 1:8 is the Hebrew "hagah", which has several meanings. One meaning is to roar. Christian meditation differs from that of eastern religions in that we do not empty our minds. Instead, we fill our minds with the Word of God. As we meditate on scripture, we mutter the word quietly to ourselves. Then there are times when we roar the word.
When the devil roars fear, shame, defeat, and hopelessness at you, roar back! You are the real lion! Christ, the Word and Conquering Lion, resides in you. The devil is a fake lion. Resist him with the word, and you will turn his roar into a defeated whimper!
