The recent solar eclipse has got me thinking about shared human experiences. As the skies took centre stage, I found myself caught up in this celestial wonder along with millions around the world. Maybe you did too. But only a lucky few, at the right location, with clear weather were able to witness it fully. As Emma Brockes of the Guardian writes it was 'an event that rewards a small number of people with an awe-inspiring experience and (leaves) everyone else staring at clouds while murmuring “wow” and wondering when they can leave.' Jokes aside, the next day the internet was full of people who felt they missed the experience of a lifetime, feeling a genuine sense of loss.

This feeling of FOMO - the fear of missing out - has become widespread. Whether it is about Taylor Swift concert tickets or the trendiest vacation spot, FOMO is on the rise. Even when people do get what they are chasing after, they are sometimes left feeling empty after the fact. Some teenagers are susceptible to a post-Taylor-Swift-concert comedown, saying they're scared they'll 'never feel the same happiness again'.
