The use of the English word ‘god’ (beginning with small ’g’) to denote Hindu ‘Devata’ has become so prevalent that even some of the Hindu spiritual gurus have accepted it and invariably employ it in their discourses. Devata-s are divine beings who direct the activities of this whole cosmos and bring welfare to humanity. Devata-s are connected in the Vedic cosmology and metaphysics through a single, integral framework whereas the various pagan, polytheistic ‘gods’ lacked this unity. Devata-s are also sometimes translated as ‘angels’.  Angels are created ex-nihilo by God as per Christianity and Judaism and they act as God’s messengers. In Hinduism, however, jivatma-s with unusually good past karma-s take on the position of devata-s. This video discusses how ‘devata’ is completely different from Judeo-Christian ideas of angels and gods.
