Rajiv Malhotra and Vaidya P. Rammanohar discuss various aspects of doshas and dispel some common myths. Vaidya Rammanohar explains that doshas represent a continuum of function and structure – they are neither substance, nor fluid nor energy, although they could manifest as one or more of these. Doshas are defined as that when it malfunctions causes a breakdown of the body. The very design of the body is such that it will self-destruct and hence the doshas must be managed.
Vaidya Rammanohar explains how doshas are not the same as humor. Humor is borrowed from Greek medical system which considered the body to be made of fluids like yellow bile, black bile, blood and phlegm – but the doshas are not fluids. They discuss how western scholars wanted to show that Ayurveda derived from Greek medical system and hence proposed this false equivalence, and even today many Indian scholars use the terms doshas and humor interchangeably.
Rajiv asks if there are experimental markers to identify doshas and Vaidya Rammanohar explains that there are studies trying to find bio-chemical and genetic correlates of doshas, but at this point they are not comprehensive enough to derive any conclusions.
