Description

In the Indian tradition, the Sanskrit words ‘Itihasa’ and ‘Purana’ denote a corpus of texts which form the very foundation of Indian ethos in all its aspects. There are two Itihasas namely Ramayana and Mahabharata whereas the purana-s are many in number with generally 18 of them regarded as more exhaustive and important. These two Sanskrit words have been victims of misinterpretation due to their translation in English using words like ‘myth’ or ‘history’. In this video Rajiv and Babaji discuss why these two genres of Indian narrative texts cannot be adequately described by these English terms. Itihasa-s and purana-s belong to a genre which is unique to the Indian tradition and it would be futile to make them forcibly fit into the definition of English words like myth or history.
