Fear of failure can be both a conscious and unconscious emotional response. Sometimes we don't even know we're afraid of failing. It can show up as self sabotage, a cold hearted self critic, or even perfectionism to the point where nothing gets fully finished because it's "not good enough yet." It's not always easy, but there are ways to face your fears and move through them so you can finally experience success in whatever it is you are wanting to do in your life.
3 Ways To Combat The Fear Of Failure:
1. Practice Making Intentional Mistakes: This may sound super counterintuitive, but when you practice making mistakes you are able to re-program your mind that mistakes aren't the end all to every situation. Start with small mistakes like spilling a drink at the table. Then laugh about your mistake and find a solution for the problem. In this example it would be to simply clean up the spilled drink on the table. The laughter here is the key. It brings joy into the moment of normal frustration which, with practice, will eventually carry over to more stressful situations. Remember we're not using self-deprecating humor, so don't call yourself dumb or say you're stupid during this process, maybe come up with a different catch phrase for when you make mistakes like "haha silly sally haha" to keep the mood light and not harmful.
2. Create New Habits: I used to have a massive fear of spiders. To get over that fear, anytime there was a spider in the house and I wanted to put it outside, I would talk to the spider. I'd name them Nancy or Freddy and we'd become friends before I trapped them under a clear glass jar so I could put them outside where they can thrive in the wild and not anywhere near me! Ha! Finding a way to change your perspective on the situation can really help to overcome those daunting feelings of fear. If you have a fear of being on camera, practice video calling someone you trust so you can get used to seeing yourself on screen. If you have a fear of speaking in public, practice with a group of friends. We have to create the habits that lead us to success. The more you practice doing something you are afraid of, the less the fear will affect you.
3. Asana and Affirmations: As always, flowing through physical postures or poses as you listen to affirmations can help to move & release any stagnant energy within the deep tissues of the body as well as re-program the neurotransmitters in your brain that control your automatic responses.
