Description

In this authentic, impactful, and educational episode, Chelsea Kerstens, Executive Director for Epilepsy Durham Region, shares parts her journey with epilepsy, and some of the challenges she experienced when it came to finding employment, and within the long trial-and-error process of finding the right treatment for her chronic condition. She experienced the stigmatization around epilepsy firsthand and is now dedicated to helping others navigate their own journey with epilepsy through support systems, local resources, and sharing parts of her story. Chelsea is now 10 years seizure and medication free. She began her work at Epilepsy Durham Region as a volunteer, in which she developed a love for social services, community engagement, and sharing her story as a way to educate and empower others. She gradually worked her way up to the Executive Director position, embracing the value, vision, and mission of the not-for-profit organization.

During our conversation, we touch on the following key Self-Empowerment Takeaways:

1.    Be Your Own Advocate.

2.    Practice Self-Care.

3.    Share Your Story

4.    Build a Support Network.
