The stats are staggering: 48.5 million (16.7%) Americans (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in the past year. 20.4 million American adults (7.9%) suffered from both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder, or co-occurring disorders in the past year. The total cost to Americans in lost wages and means of coping and adjusting is a staggering $740 billion (that's with a B!) ... with some saying that's too conservative! This says nothing of the exponential cost we pay daily in emotion, mental, and spiritual capital. What's the answer?
The Gospel, of course. Only Jesus says to humanity: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (Jn 8:36). But freedom doesn't come at bargain prices. It will cost your pride, your thinking, your assumptions ... and for Jesus it cost him his life. But freedom can be found!
