Business can be a tricky thing - which is why half of all businesses fail within 5 years. They have to pivot quickly, and respond to market changes and customer expectations. But one thing that will only confuse everyone and lead to poor business is mission creep. Mission creep is when an entity's goals gradually expand beyond it's original goal, becoming too complex, inappropriately stretching resources and making the organization functionally irrelevant. A great example is Blockbuster Video. Their mission statement was "To be the global leader in rentable home entertainment by providing outstanding service, selection, convenience and value." At one time, "getting a video at Blockbuster" was the way to spend a Saturday night. Now, barely anyone remembers the stores - and worse - doesn't miss the services they provided because of streaming video. Blockbuster could have led the way, because streaming would have been so much more efficient. But they forgot their mission.
Forgetting the mission for the Church is costly. The mission was, is, and always will be people. People loved by God, and by implication, loved by his Redeemed ones. But if we learn anything from 2,000 years of history, it's that mission creep is EASY to do. Listen in on this interesting take on how Jesus meant for us to keep the mission The Mission.
