Description

How would you feel if you were turned away from receiving healthcare services because of how you identify? This is the reality for some individuals in Malawi and the center of this episode.

Our host, Hetal Baman speaks with Rodger Phiri, Executive Director of Art & Global Health Centre Africa (ArtGlo). Together, they explore the challenges faced by the LGBTQI community in accessing healthcare due to stigma and discrimination. Rodger shares how he's changing the narrative by implementing the Umunthu philosophy—"I am because we are"—to promote inclusive health services.

With over a decade of experience as a development practitioner, Rodger has led innovative programs and participatory action research initiatives across Malawi and the Southern African region. He spearheaded the Umunthu Healthcare Workers programme, which addresses health access disparities faced by LGBTQI individuals by engaging frontline health service providers, students in nursing and medical colleges, and community leaders.

Join us as we explore how embracing the Umunthu philosophy can transform healthcare access for marginalized communities in Malawi and beyond.
