Today's poem is "On Friendship" by Kahlil Gibran.

Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanon-born American poet of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was educated in Beirut, Boston and Paris and during his lifetime considered himself to be mainly a painter.

This piece, "On Friendship", is one of the most popular pieces in his most popular book, The Prophet, which was published in 1923.

The Prophet — a collection of 26 prose poetry fables touching on everything from self-knowledge to crime, marriage to joy, talking to teaching — has been published in more than 100 languages and is one of the best-selling books of all time. In the 100 years since its publication it has never been out of print.
