He stopped Loving her today.
Back when I was a kid...I remember someone telling me that our mailman was a dance teacher at night.
I used to watch him sometimes to see if he would deliver the mail differently than the others....more glamorously......more gracefully.
Somehow I expected to see him leap over the hedges with his toes pointing perfectly like arrows, and landing on the other side like Gene Kelly, or Donald O’connor... but he never did ....he just walked.
Though I must admit he definitely walked with a certain panache that I’m not entirely sure I hadn’t created in my head.
I got to know him pretty well over the years...and as I grew older, we’d often talk. He told me that he’d been married once but she’d run off with a man who sold carpet cleaning equipment. I asked if it still hurt...he just stared at me with his lower lip trembling until he said he’d better get moving lest he be late.
One day he told me he felt like he was starting to disappear. I didn't believe him and so he stopped & held his hand up and sure enuff it was like thin, waxed paper in the sun. Finally I said you seem to be taking this pretty well. You're surprisingly calm for a man who is disappearing... but he said it was a relief after all those years of trying to keep the pieces of his life in one place.
One day, a couple of years later... he put a package in my hand. “This is the last piece of my life,” he said, take good care of it, But don’t open it until you think the time is right...you’ll know when that is.
Then he smiled and carried on with his route.
I never saw him again...and I was sure that somehow he’d passed away, but his replacement said he’d merely been transferred to a different neighbourhood.
Years later I opened the package.
There was nothing inside except a cocktail napkin from some place called “Lee’s Liquor lounge” with a pair of lips covered in distinctly beautiful red lipstick dabbed in one corner.
...suddenly I understood what he meant and I stood there for a long time crying & laughing at the same time.
