After a few week hiatus, we're back today for a relatively impromptu discussion about some things we're learning from the late Dr. Michael S. Heiser (www.youtube.com/@drmsh). We'd heard of Dr. Heiser's work from Dr. Tim Mackie and John Collins, whose own work you can find at www.youtube.com/@bibleproject. Heiser makes the point that in order to really understand the Bible, we have to dive into and understand the numerous contexts and the world view held by the authors and original recipients of Scripture. Much of what we're learning from him are from the "weird" parts of the Bible that often get glossed over to make the Bible's message more palatable. But Dr. Heiser said, "If it's weird, it's important." There are so many different directions we could go as we dive into Dr. Heiser's teaching but we decided to coalesce around Matthew 16:13-20, the scene from Jesus' ministry where, at Caesarea Philipi, Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" and where Simon Peter declared, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." There's more to come as we continue to learn from Dr. Heiser's astute understanding of the Bible and we welcome you to join us as we take this journey.
