While there are certainly benefits to sharing our experiences with others, oversharing can also have negative consequences. Aside from making others feel uncomfortable, who are you sharing with? What's your motive? do they have the emotional maturity to process what you are sharing?
So, how can we avoid oversharing? One strategy is to pause and think before we share. Ask yourself: is this something I would feel comfortable sharing with this person? how does sharing help me? Is it relevant to the conversation or context? Will it make someone else uncomfortable or put them in an awkward position?
Another strategy is to set boundaries for yourself. Decide how much personal information you're comfortable sharing ahead of time, and stick to those boundaries. Remember that you don't have to share everything with everyone, and it's okay to keep some things private.
Oversharing can have negative consequences for both ourselves and others. By being mindful of what we share and setting boundaries for ourselves, we can avoid the pitfalls of oversharing , putting ourselves in toxic situations or relationships.
