Description

Today, we’re going to jump backward a bit to talking about dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).  We’ve covered Mindfulness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance previously.  We’re going to cover the remaining piece today which is interpersonal effectiveness.  The goal of this concept is to deal with conflict situations effectively while increasing self respect simultaneously.

Learning to get along with others while also attending to your own needs is essential to the development of healthy relationships. It can be challenging to balance your own needs alongside the needs of others. How can you get what you need without being aggressive or dismissive of the needs of others? Today, we’re going to talk about four specific sets of skills that will help us to achieve this goal:  objective effectiveness, relationship effectiveness, and self-respect effectiveness and boundary setting effectiveness.
