Ed Gein was an American murderer and body snatcher who was active in the mid-twentieth century. He was born on August 27, 1906, in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, and died on July 26, 1984, at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin. Gein is known for his bizarre and gruesome crimes, which included grave robbing, murder, and the creation of human-skin objects.
Gein's crimes were discovered in 1957, when police officers searching his farmhouse found evidence of his disturbing activities. The officers discovered human skulls, a human heart, a face mask made from human skin, and other body parts. Gein had been robbing graves and using the body parts to create household items, such as lampshades and furniture, as well as clothing made from human skin.
Gein was also suspected of killing several women in the area, although he was only convicted of the murder of two women: Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the rest of his life in mental institutions.
