Control What You Can
In the body of Christ, every believer has a unique role and function. The Bible uses the metaphor of a human body to describe the Church, emphasizing the importance of each member playing their part for the proper functioning and growth of the whole. Here are some key points on how we are to function in the body of Christ:
- Unity and Diversity: 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (NIV) compares the Church to a body, highlighting that though there are many different parts, they all form one body. Each believer has unique gifts, talents, and roles, but they are united in their purpose to glorify God and serve one another.
- Spiritual Gifts: Romans 12:4-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 discuss spiritual gifts bestowed upon believers by the Holy Spirit. These gifts, such as teaching, serving, encouraging, and leadership, are meant to be used for the edification of the Church. Each member is encouraged to discover and develop their spiritual gifts and use them to bless others.
- Servant Leadership: Jesus set an example of servant leadership by washing the disciples' feet (John 13:14-15). As followers of Christ, we are called to serve one another in humility, putting others' needs before our own. This includes using our gifts and abilities to support, encourage, and meet the needs of fellow believers.
- Love and Cooperation: In 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, the apostle Paul highlights the importance of love in all aspects of Christian life. As members of the body of Christ, we are called to love one another, bear each other's burdens, and work together in harmony. Cooperation, unity, and mutual support enable the body to function effectively.
- Submission and Accountability: Ephesians 5:21 encourages believers to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. This submission involves recognizing and respecting the leadership and authority structures within the Church. It also involves being accountable to one another, seeking guidance, correction, and encouragement when needed.
- Encouragement and Edification: Hebrews 10:24-25 urges believers to consider how to spur one another on toward love and good deeds. We are to encourage, support, and build up fellow believers, providing comfort, guidance, and exhortation as needed.
By embracing our unique roles, utilizing our spiritual gifts, serving one another in love, and participating actively in the life of the Church, we contribute to the growth and well-being of the body of Christ. Each member's faithful functioning enriches the community and brings glory to God.
