Don’t Be Stubborn

If People Can’t See What God Is Doing

1For people who hate discipline

and only get more stubborn,

There’ll come a day when life tumbles in and they break,

but by then it’ll be too late to help them.

2When good people run things, everyone is glad,

but when the ruler is bad, everyone groans.

3If you love wisdom, you’ll delight your parents,

but you’ll destroy their trust if you run with prostitutes.

4A leader of good judgment gives stability;

an exploiting leader leaves a trail of waste.

5A flattering neighbor is up to no good;

he’s probably planning to take advantage of you.

6Evil people fall into their own traps;

good people run the other way, glad to escape.

7The good-hearted understand what it’s like to be poor;

the hardhearted haven’t the faintest idea.

8A gang of cynics can upset a whole city;

a group of sages can calm everyone down.

9A sage trying to work things out with a fool

gets only scorn and sarcasm for his trouble.

10Murderers hate honest people;

moral folks encourage them.

11A fool lets it all hang out;

a sage quietly mulls it over.

12When a leader listens to malicious gossip,

all the workers get infected with evil.

13The poor and their abusers have at least something in common:

they can both see—their sight, God’s gift!

14Leadership gains authority and respect

when the voiceless poor are treated fairly.

15Wise discipline imparts wisdom;

spoiled adolescents embarrass their parents.

16When degenerates take charge, crime runs wild,

but the righteous will eventually observe their collapse.

All Prayed Up:

Heavenly Father,

As we come before you in prayer, we draw inspiration from the wisdom contained in Proverbs 29. Your Word is a wellspring of guidance, and we seek your insight as we reflect on these teachings.

Lord, we recognize the importance of heeding correction and rebuke. Grant us humble hearts that are open to correction, knowing that it leads to growth and wisdom. Help us to listen attentively to those who offer guidance, understanding that their words can shape our character and refine our actions.

We ask for discernment, O God, to recognize the pitfalls of stubbornness and arrogance. Let not pride blind us to the truth or hinder us from walking in your ways. Instead, fill us with the humility that leads to righteousness, drawing us closer to your heart.

Father, we lift up leaders and those in authority, echoing the verse that states, "When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice." May those in positions of power lead with integrity and righteousness, fostering an environment where justice prevails and the well-being of all is prioritized.

Guide us in making wise choices, Lord, knowing that the paths we choose shape our destiny. Give us clarity of mind as we make decisions that impact our lives and the lives of those around us. May our choices be in alignment with your will and purposes.

Lord, guard us against dishonesty and deceit. Let our words be truthful and our actions just, that we may build trust with those we interact with. May our integrity shine as a testament to your righteousness.

As we seek to discipline ourselves and cultivate self-control, grant us the strength to resist temptations that lead us away from you. Help us overcome the desires of the flesh, and empower us to walk in the Spirit, honoring you in all aspects of our lives.

We pray for your divine protection and guidance, Lord. Illuminate our path and lead us to the places of safety and refuge that you provide. May our steps be ordered by your wisdom, and may our lives reflect your love and grace.

Thank you, gracious Father, for the timeless wisdom found in Proverbs 29. May these teachings guide us as we journey through life, seeking to live in a manner that honors you.

In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
